CAD schme for detection of lacunar infarcts in brain MR images

(in English) The detection of asymptomatic lacunar infarcts on magnetic resonance (MR) images are important tasks for radiologists to ensure the prevention of sever cerebral infarctions. However, accurate identification of lacunar infarcts is difficult because it is hard to distinguish lacunar infarcts and enlarged Virchow-Robin spaces. Therefore, we developed a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) scheme for detection of lacunar infarcts. The current performance level by computer is 96.8% in sensitivity with a number of false positives of 0.3 per image. As the next step in this study, we carried out an observer study to evaluate radiologists’ performance in detection of lacunar infarcts without and with use of the CAD scheme. Nine radiologists participated in the observer study. For all 9 observers, average area under the receiver operating characteristic curve value was increased from 0.886 to 0.930 when they use the computer output. In conclusion, our CAD scheme has the potential to improve the accuracy of radiologists’ performance in the detection of lacunar infarcts on MR images.
