Use of an optical single side-band (OSSB) modulation signal engenders high bandwidth efficiency because the OSSB signal occupies only half the channel bandwidth necessary for intensity modulation. Conventional OSSB scheme have utilized electrical Hilbert transformers, which result in some drawbacks. In this paper, novel OSSB scheme called “optically phase-shifted SSB modulation” is proposed to overcome the drawbacks. This paper describes the principle of the OSSB and the required characteristics of Hilbert transformers in optical domain. Moreover, the novel OSSB modulation is experimentally demonstrated employing a fiber-based optical Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) as the third-order Hilbert transformer. The results support the theory of OPS-SSB modulation. |
