Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) It has been speculated that dysfunction of the peritoneal membrane including loss of ultrafiltration capacity is related with abnormal production and/or metabolism of endogenous nitric oxide (NO). Tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) is a key cofactor of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) to maintain the NOS activity. The aim of this study was thus to measure concentrations of NO and its related factors in peritoneal dialysis solutions in CAPD patients to study the possible involvement of NO in the peritoneal dysfunction. NO and BH4 concentrations were significantly higher in the dialysate after 5-6 hr CAPD than in the dialysate immediately after an exchange of CAPD solution. Both NO and BH4 tended to increase in the time course, and thus it was suggested that NO be produced from the peritoneal and surrounding tissues and that BH4 be involved in the changes in NO production. Direct measurement of NO concentration will thus contribute to investigation of possible involvement of NO in the changes in peritoneal membrane functions in CAPD.
