A Study on Optical Wireless Communications with LED Traffic Light

(in English) This paper is concerned with an optical wireless communication system using LED traffic lights. This system has been developed with the aim at providing a low cost information delivery service for pedestrians, especially for aged or handicapped people. In this system, the light wave emitted from an LED traffic light has been modulated by amplitude modulation so far. However, the sun light may greatly influence the performance of amplitude-modulated signals, and there has been a problem in the long distance transmission. In this paper, we propose to use frequency modulation for this system. We describe the results of field trials in the presence of the sun light using the developed experimental sets of LED transmitter and receiver, which are also described in this paper.
