To theoretically investigate emission patterns from two-dimensional microcavity lasers, two approaches are allowed, one based on the wave picture and the other based on the ray picture. When the ray dynamics inside the cavity becomes integrable, the ray picture can be derived from the wave picture by the Eikonal approximation in the short-wavelength limit. However, when the ray dynamics becomes chaotic, the Eikonal approximation breaks down so that one lacks a theoretical basis to validate the ray picture. Nevertheless, for a stadium cavity, where the ray dynamics becomes strongly chaotic, we show that the ray picture reproduces the results of the wave picture in the short-wavelength regime. In addition, we show that experimental far-field emission patterns for stadium-shaped semiconductor microcavity lasers can be well reproduced by the ray picture. |
