We identify functions and technologies of communications systems required by users and communities in local regions, and propose a community network service platform that allows local communities or organizations to create, operate, and manage their own networks for providing services suitable for their local requirements, without depending on telecommunication companies. To allow communities deploy various services easily, we have been motivated to keep “openness” in the design principles. One major feature of the proposed platform is that mesh-topological L2-level logical paths are configured dynamically among communication endpoints so that fast logical-path switching is possible in emergency cases and multicast is supported. We show evaluation results of path switching delays in an experimental system that we developed using commercial products such as WiFi and Ethernet devices. We also demonstrate an example application of the proposed platform to the community. |
