Scanning technique by echolocating bats -- Flight behavior and pulse direction simultaneously observed by the laboratory recording --

(in English) Bats and dolphins possess highly-developed biosonar system. In this study, we examined directional patterns of echolocation pulses of Japanese FM bats (Pipistrellu abramus) during flight in the laboratory, recorded with microphone array system. We discussed the relationship between the pulse direction and flight path of the bat. The result shows that change in the emitted direction of pulses preceded the transition of flight direction of the bat in the case of U-turn. In addition, we found that the bat decided the emitted direction of pulses at the distance between 1 and 2 m from the landing net according to the following flight behavior (landing or U-turn). These finding provide important information about scanning technique by echolocating bats.
