We have proposed previously a technique for measuring distributed strain and temperature with a very high measurand resolution. This technique makes use of the jagged appearance of Rayleigh backscatter traces from a single-mode fiber measured using a coherent optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) with a precisely frequency-controlled light source. However, the restorability of the Rayleigh backscatter traces that is essential for our measurement technique has not been confirmed experimentally as yet and the measurement procedure has still to be studied. In this paper, we present experimental results that confirm, for the first time, the restorability of the Rayleigh backscatter traces. In addition, we describe a practical method to derive the strain or temperature distribution from Rayleigh backscatter traces measured at multiple laser frequencies. Our numerical simulation, which includes an estimation of the signal-to-noise ratio of the OTDR, shows that the technique enables us to measure distributed strain / temperature with a resolution better than 1 strain / 0.1 and a spatial resolution of 10 cm over a 20-km long fiber. |
