(in English) Ionospheric perturbations prior to a large Japanese earthquake (2005 Aug. 16; Miyagi-oki earthquake) have been detected on the basis of the reception of LF transmitter (JJY, 40kHz, in Fukushima prefecture) signals aboard DEMETER satellite. It is found that the LF signal intensity is depressed before the earthquake, which can be explained in terms of the enhanced absorption in the disturbed D region of whistler-made LF signals.
