This paper describes a method for dividing lung regions into bronchopulmonary segments based on bronchial structure analysis.
The lung consists of five lobes which are divided into nineteen bronchopulmonary segments.
In the analysis of pulmonary diseases, it is important to recognize bronchopulmonary segments which are specified by intrasegmental bronchi. Though their boundaries cannot be observed on CT images, it seems that they can be estimated from the basin of each intrasegmental bronchus. Thus, we propose a method for dividing the lung into bronchopulmonary segments using results of the nomenclature of a bronchial tree. We first label anatomical names to each branch of a bronchial tree, and then apply Voronoi diagram to the lung regions whose seeds are intrasegmental bronchus and their descending branches. The proposed method was applied to thirteen cases of 3D chest CT images. The results showed that bronchopulmonary segments could be divided satisfactorily. |
