Improvement of VANET-based Cooperative Collision Avoidance Systems

(in English) Internetworking over VANETs has been gaining a great deal of momentum over the past few years. Intra-Platoon Cooperative Collision Avoidance (CCA) systems form an important aspect of VANET's safety applications. The success of any CCA system hinges on its responsiveness to emergency scenarios.
For this purpose, we suggest the clustering of cars according to their transmission ranges. To reduce the number of packet drops and the associated retransmissions, warning messages are sent only by designated cluster heads. To further enhance the responsiveness of the CCA system, a Risk-aware MAC protocol is designed. In the proposed scheme, an emergency level is defined for each car based on its order in the platoon/cluster. The waiting latency of each car for the transmission of warning messages (in case of emergency cases) is computed as a function of its emergency level. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated via simulations and encouraging results are obtained.
