This paper deals with an ultrasonic motor using single crystal LiNbO$_3$ as a lead-free piezo-material. A single phase drive ultrasonic motor is suitable for miniaturization. Thus, the authors have proposed a mode-coupling vibrator to obtain a single phase motor using a parallelogram shape as same construction using piezo-ceramic. However, the parallelogram vibrator has problems that the contact point for the rotor is easily sifted by a preload force. Additionally, the crystal characteristics are not utilized enough in its structure. In this paper, we propose a LiNbO$_3$ crystal motor of mode-couping symmetrical rectangular vibrator using an X-rotated Y-cut wafer with additional rotation in the y'-axis. The construction of a trial motor which is designed using finite element method analysis, and its experimental results are described. |
