Ultrasonic spectroscopy of silicate glasses

(in English) Ultrasonic characterization of silicate glasses was conducted by measuring bulk acoustic properties in the VHF/UHF range. The frequency and temperature dependences of the longitudinal and shear velocities and attenuation coefficients, and the density were measured with high accuracy for eleven kinds of commercial silicate glasses around room temperature. Remarkable changes in the acoustic properties caused by the addition of modifiers into silica glass were observed. For silicate glasses other than silica-titania glass, significant velocity dispersions were observed; the attenuation coefficients are considerably larger, and the slopes of their frequency dependences are gentler as compared with that of pure silica glass. The velocities decrease almost linearly with increasing the concentration of modifiers. The densities increase with increasing the concentration and molecular weight of modifiers. The temperature coefficients of elastic constants decrease from positive to negative with increasing the concentration of modifiers.
