The measurement of the nonlinearity parameter B/A based on the finite amplitude method for a 1 mm thick polymer plate which is put, together with a sound reflector set at the back, within the focal region of 18.6 MHz focused ultrasound yields an extraordinary B/A value as large as 27, for example, in polystyrene. Although this may be attributable to a velocity dispersion in the sample to suppress the phase delay of the second harmonic sound due to diffraction and to enhance the second harmonic generation as a result, the dispersion in the polystyrene sample is so small that the resultant phase advance of the second harmonic is only 0.08 radians after a two-way travel in the plate. On the other hand, as a multiple reflection takes place in a small gap between the sample and sound reflector, a phase difference is induced between the fundamental and second harmonic components in the reflected sound. The experiment demonstrates a 0.44 radian phase advance of the second harmonic, which is induced by a 5.5 μm gap. Taking into account these phase advances, the B/A in polystyrene is estimated to be 11.4. The sound dispersion is greater in other polymer samples. When the effects of velocity dispersion and gap are taken into consideration, the B/A values are obtained as 11.9, 10.5, 10.0 and 9.2 for an acrylic, PET, PVC and PC plate, respectively. |
