Neural Substrates for Inference of Other's Mind based on Perspective Taking and Information Suppression

(in English) Humans have an ability to infer other’s mind called Theory of Mind (ToM), which is generally tested by a false belief task. Although many researches have reported activities of medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC), posterior superior temporal sulcus / temporal parietal junction (pSTS/TPJ), and temporal pole (TP) when performing the false belief task, it has been problematic that different stimulus were used in each condition. Thus, activities of 3 regions may reflect cognitive function other than ToM. We retested activities of 3 regions with same stimulus between conditions in Experiment 1. Then, we subdivided ToM into perspective taking and information suppression, and tried to detect brain regions subserving these functions in Experiment 2. Participants were presented 4-panel cartoon one by one, and required to infer the ends of story (last panel) from the previous three panels adopting cartoon character’s or participant’s own perspective (other vs. self), with or without information suppression (false vs. true belief). Results showed that MPFC, particuraly anterior rostral / orbitral medial frontal lobe (ar/oMFC), is related to information suppression.
