Adaptive rate control method for IEEE 802.11 by using NAV period

(in English) In wireless communication environments, the fading, which is dynamic fluctuation of the signal intensity, occurs due to the movement of terminals.
IEEE 802.11 standard for wireless LAN systems, offers multiple transmission rate.
Several researches have proposed adaptive rate control methods for IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN systems.
However, almost all of them requires modifications on the frame structure in IEEE 802.11.
Hence, it is difficult to select the transmission rate for each data frame with compatibility system with IEEE 802.11 standard.
In this paper, we propose a new adaptive rate control method, which utilizes a NAV (Network Allocation Vector) value in RTS/CTS frames and employs TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) throughput as a criterion for selecting the transmission rate.
From simulation results, the proposed method can improve the system capacity in wireless LAN system and improve the throughput performance for each mobile node.
