Lateral sound localization on 3/2 loudspeaker arrangement

(in English) The 3/2 loudspeaker arrangement is recommended for DVD, terrestrial digital broadcasting and other applications. However, since the 3/2 loudspeaker arrangement is designed for frontal sound image localization, it is said to have difficulty in localizing the sound image on lateral directions. This study discusses realizing stable lateral sound localization from the 3/2 loudspeaker arrangement. We first calculate the Sound Reproduction Transfer Function(SRTF) using multi-channel transaural technology. We then consider the reduced number of loudspeaker to simplify the lateral sound localization control. We determine the loudspeaker arrangement for stable sound localization by using normalized square error and a system evaluation
metric. Finally, we perform a listening test for sound localization. It is found that the sound localization generated by 5ch triggers so much front-back confusion that it is difficult to localize the sound image on lateral directions.
