Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page) 
(in English) A “fast motion vector estimation (ME) algorithm employing adaptively assigned search area sizes followed by hierarchical sub-sampling block matching” method was developed for MPEG-2. It can improve processing speed of the full-search method by a factor of about 95 to 300, while maintaining visual quality of the full-search method (“Football”,“Bronze with Credits”,“Opening Ceremony” , etc. NTSC, 4 Mbps, 30 frames/sec, search area sizes =±64 pixels).
