An analog VLSI for real-time moving object localization has been developed based on binarized pixel data (activity bits) in which a new adaptive threshold determination method has been explored.
The most difficult issue in this approach is the adaptive setting of the threshold for binarizing the differential image obtained by taking the frame difference in the pixel intensities.
We have developed the concept of ``OR-amplification,'' in which the activity bits from moving object are differentiated from those due to other origins by dynamically observing the appearance of the activity bits as a function of the threshold value.
The proposed hardware algorithm has been verified by computer simulations.
A proof-of-concept test chip was designed in a 0.18$\mu$m single-poly quintuple-metal CMOS technology and the circuit simulation results from the test chip are presented to demonstrate the operation. |
