A dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) is one of the efficient electronic devices, by which photonic energy is transformed into electronic energy. Such an electronic device is constructed by several materials, in which a dye is an important factor for the improvement of this system. Recently, several efficient organic dyes have been designed and synthesized for the solar cell system, such as coumarin dyes and merocyanine dyes, while ruthenium complexes have been often used. We have developed a series of carbazole dyes which have a carbazole moiety as a donor, an oligothiophene part and cyanoacetic acid adsorption. Among them, the photovoltaic efficiency as 8.3 % (Jsc = 15.2 mAcm–2, Voc = 0.73 V, FF = 0.75, AM1.5G with an aperture mask) was achieved by using a DSSC based on MK-2 dye. It is noteworthy that the relatively high open-circuit voltage was obtained among organic dyes due to the improvement of the electron lifetime of injected electrons in the TiO2 electrode. Here we will discuss of the detail that the structure of organic dyes can be affected to the photovoltaic performance of DSSCs. |
