We discuss several topics concerning the generation and management of THz signals using nonlinear waves in semiconductor devices and circuits. A transmission line periodically loaded with resonant tunneling diodes (RTDs) supports the exponential (sinusoidal) mode at the voltage range smaller (larger) than the peak voltage. It is observed that the quasi‐steady isolated pulses resulting from the coupling of the exponential and sinusoidal modes are compressed greatly. In addition, when a step pulse is input to the RTD line, the pulse edge exhibits the back‐and‐forth propagation. Both the pulse and continuous waves can be generated through these characteristics of RTD lines. Composite right‐ and left‐handed (CRLH) transmission lines exhibit both the right‐ and left‐handed properties. We found that the nonlinear Schro¨dinger equation governs the wave propagation in CRLH lines introducing nonlinearity by varactors, and discuss the dynamics of quasi‐solitons developed in one‐ and two‐dimensional CRLH lines. Solitons are also supported in the gated two‐dimensional electron gas (2DEG) systems. We developed a numerical solver of electron transport in the gated 2DEG. We discuss the application of electronic solitons as a THz generator after describing the dynamics of solitons numerically. |
