The mono sound localization on the wave field synthesis with spatial transfer functions
Shin Tanoue, Haruhide Hokari, Shoji Shimada (Nagaoka Univ. of Tech.) EA2007-93
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Wave field synthesis allows a loudspeaker array to create a secondary sound field equivalent to the primary sound field.
It is expected to extend the effective listening area, since the listener can perceive the same sound location without regard to sitting position.
To the best of our knowledge, however, it appears that no publication has measured the relationship between sound source location and listener position.
This report describes an experimental method that employs spatial transfer functions to examine wave field synthesis; wave front studies and subjective assessment tests elucidate the characteristics of sound localization.
The main result is that the secondary wave field created by a loudspeaker array is slightly different from the primary wave field created by a monoaural sound source, but the primary and secondary wave fields offer the same perceived sound location in these tests.
