An experimental study of sponsored search auctions

(in English) In sponsored search auctions, the "Generalized Second Price" (GSP) auction is commonly used by major search engines. GSP is similar to the Vickrey-Clarke-Groves (VCG) mechanism which has an incentive compatible property. Edelman et al. [2] showed GSP is more profitable for search engines than VCG if an equilibrium is achieved in each mechanism. In this paper, we report on a series of experiments examining whether equilibria are achieved in GSP and VCG, and which mechanism is more profitable.
