QoS(Quality of Service) control in WLAN(IEEE802.11 Wireless LAN) is getting important since WLAN is widely deployed as an access network and it also lays in an important position to provide seamless QoS communication between wired network and terminals. Although many previous researches focused increase of total throughput or bandwidth in WLAN, very few treated per flow QoS, ie. individual TCP/UDP flow QoS. IEEE802.11e might provide QoS functions but it has many limitations both in a number of classes and in effects on per flow QoS. Instead of 802.11e or other modification of 802.11, we propose an approach both to provide per flow QoS and to keep existing terminals as they are. The proposed idea is ROC (Receive Opportunity Control in MAC Frame), in which a MAC frame is received only if it has enough priority, otherwise it is discarded. Retransmission and back-off mechanism in 802.11DCF are then invoked. This results in QoS degradation for low-prioirty flows and results in QoS improvement for high-priority flows. Performance evaluation shows that ROC brings somewhat performance degradation in total WLAN throughput but can achieve not only QoS improvement for high-priority flows but also can give them arbitrary controllable throughput value. |
