[Invited Talk] Recent Trend of Transmission Technology for Super Resolution Images

(in English) As the digital terrestrial broadcasting service becomes a main stream with a nationwide coverage, TV broadcasting, one of the most representative video applications is fully shifting to HDTV capability. However, an innovation of video technology is not closed at this level, and further functional improvements are expected to be introduced. As the technical point, a higher picture quality and a higher image resolution are principal elements, and so called ultra realistic functionalities such as a 3D image and a free-viewpoint video are also found among ongoing research activities. In this paper, a trend of a recent video coding technology designed for super high resolution images, especially for digital cinema. First, an outline of Hollywood digital cinema specification is introduced as a representative format of a super high resolution images. Then, a technical trend of a video coding scheme applicable for a super high resolution images is described. Finally, the prospects for a next generation video coding tools are remarked from the perspective of market needs and standardization works.
