Formation of long-period fiber gratings using a mercury lamp

A simple method was proposed to produce long-period gratings using a low-pressure mercury lamp emitting a 254 nm spectral line. A Ge-B co-doped fiber loaded with hydrogen was irradiated with a lamp through an amplitude mask with a grating period of 460 μm and an effective length of 2 cm. When an ozone-generation lamp with 185 nm spectral line was used, attenuation of 17.9 dB was obtained by irradiation for 63 hours. When the lamp was replaced with an ozone-free lamp, attenuation of 17.9 dB was obtained by irradiation for 7 hours. For grating period of 212μm, it took 18 hours to reach a 17.6-dB attenuation. The induced refractive index change was calculated as 8×10-4 (peak to peak) by simulation. |
