[Invited Talk] T2K Open Supercomputer and Its Interconnection Network

(in English) University of Tsukuba, University of Tokyo and Kyoto University has been pursuing collaborative R\&D work on next generation supercomputers by forming T2K Open Supercomputer Alliance whose primary target is to design T2K Open Supercomputer Specification for their forthcoming supercomputer system replacement scheduled on June 2008. The fundamental concept of the specification is to make the supercomputers open in three aspects; open architecture based on commodity devices and technologies; an open-source based software stack to incorporate state-of-the-art middlewares and tools also open-sourced; and openness to a wide spectrum of users not only of traditional scientific/numeric computing but also of emerging non-numeric (e.g. text-oriented) large scale computing. These concepts of openness strongly reflect on the specification of an important system component, interconnection network. That is, the specification requires to achieve a large point-to-point MPI-level bandwidth 4 GB/sec or larger by trunking commodity network links such as Inifiniband, Myrinet-10G and 10Gbit Ethernet. Moreover, each system or its large scale subsystem will have so-called full bisection bandwidth so that it achieves a high sustained performance with a wide range of applications rather than those with a specific type of parallel algorithms nor programming paradigms. The talk is prepared with the cooperation of many people involved in the Alliance, especially of M. Sato and T. Boku in U. Tsukuba, and Y. Ishikawa and H. Matsuba in U. Tokyo.
