Multistep Charge Method by Charge Arrays for Space Satellite Go Segami, Hiroaki Kusawake, Yasuhiro Shimizu, Minoru Iwasa, Koichi Kibe (JAXA) EE2007-53 |

We studied the reduction in size and weight of Power Control Unit(PCU). In the study, we focused on the weight of Battery Charge Regulator(BCR) which occupied half of the PCU’s weight. And we found the multistep charge method by charge arrays enabled the reduction of BCR. As a result, the power to weight ratio of the developed PCU had dropped by half compared with the conventional PCU.
However this method decreases the state of charge (SOC) of the battery. We did the battery test, the battery simulator test and the numerical analysis to evaluate the descent of the state of charge. And we studied the effects of this method on the life time of the battery. We concluded that the multistep charge method by charge arrays enabled to charge to the same level of the SOC compared to the conventional constant current/ constant voltage (CC/CV) charge method for the low earth orbit satellite. |
