Optimal design of radome with particle swarm optimization

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This paper presents a optimal radome design using optimization algorithm. Design of a radome is, in general, a formidable problem, since the design philosophy needs to take into account the arbitrariness with respect to the shape of the radome and the incidence angle of the incident wave into the radome. To circumvent this problem, optimization algorithm appears to be a powerful tool. In this article, an optimization algorithm called particle swarm optimization (PSO), which has recently drawn considerable attention in a wide range of applications, is employed for the design of a wideband radome, in which the frequency characteristics of the transmission coefficient of the radome is adopted as the objective function, and the radome wall thickness and the shape of the radome are optimized as the optimization variable. In addition, for the PSO algorithm, we introduce a concept analogous to “mutation” in GA so as to enhance the globality of the optimal solution, and call it as Mutated PSO (MPSO). We deal with MPSO, PSO and GA in the practical design, and report the comparisons and results of the three. As a result, MPSO is capable of updating the optimal solution even in the final phase in iterations, and achieved more stable and better behavior than did the conventional PSO with respect to searching the global optima. The observation also indicated that the transmission loss attained by the optimal solution is above -2dB for the entire frequency bandwidth evaluated.
