A Numerical study on Radio on Fiber Transmission of QAM RF signal

(in English) Radio over Fiber transmission of QAM signals on 10GHz frequency carrier is numerically studied. The study is concentrated on the effect of signal fading in optical fiber due to fiber dispersion, and the effect of the SPM-GVD effect (modulation instability). The length of the assumed transmission link is 30km, and the output power of the optical transmitter is varied from 4dBm to 16dBm. The numerical results show that the transmission penalty due to the fading can be relaxed by the parametric gain in the SPM-GVD effect. By choosing an appropriate transmission power, the transmission over the fiber can provide better performance than does the back-to-back configuration, though the excessive power will result in significant waveform distortion due to saturation of the signal amplitude in the optical envelope. In high power systems that support many base stations in one trunk fiber, equalizing techniques such as analogue electronic equalization will be necessary in the optical receivers.
