Many of biologically derived molecules (biomolecules) show liquid crystallinity with regularity and fluidity. The method for aligning the biomolecules using their liquid crystallinity is important in a field of the biotechnology. We investigated an azopolymer ,which can be patterned relief structures on the surface and can immobilize biomolecules on its surface by photoirradiation, as a substrate for the alignment of biologically-derived liquid crystals. First, we fabricated the relief structure on the azopolymer surface by exposing to the light interference. Then, we examined the alignment of biologically-derived rod-like liquid crystal (tobacco mosaic virus, TMV) on the relief structure. We confirmed that, with decreasing the grating space of the relief structure on the azopolymer surface, degree of orientation of TMV molecules was increased. |
