Adaptive PMD compensation technique for ultra high-speed signal employing novel tunable DGD generator and PSO algorithm

(in English) In this report, we describe 1st-order PMD compensator employing Michelson-interferometer-based tunable DGD generator with an ultra high time-resolution of 53as. For the adaptive operation of the PMD compensator, the feedback control based on DOP monitoring is widely used. For ultra high-speed signal beyond 100-Gb/s, however, the impact of local DOP optima on precise feedback control tends to be more significant, so that it is important to find out appropriate algorithm for the feedback control. Here, we discuss about the origin of local DOP optimum and also describe the advantage of applying particle-swarm-optimization (PSO) algorithm, which is known as very powerful method to find the grovel optimum in multimodal system, to feedback control of DOP-monitoring-based PMD compensator. In addition, we discuss about the performance of the developed adaptive PMD compensator through some results of 160Gb/s field trial on JGN2 optical test-bed.
