Performance Evaluation and Accuracy Verification of GPU-Accelerated Cone Beam Reconstruction

(in English) Generally, cone beam X-ray CT (computed tomography) scans are required to reconstruct a volume in a short time, because they are usually used during a surgery. This paper presents a GPU-accelerated volume reconstruction method for cone beam CT scans, and also shows verification results in terms of computational accuracy. Our method has a vectorization scheme that realizes fast reconstruction by reducing the number of rendering passes, namely the number of loops in the GPU. As a result, the proposed method takes 7.5 seconds to reconstruct a $512^3$ voxel volume from 308 $512^2$-pixel projection images. This execution time is equivalent to a 15-fold speedup over a CPU implementation, showing competitive results as compared with a previous method that restricts a condition of taking projection images. With respect to the accuracy, our GPU-based method can not reconstruct volumes identical to those generated by the CPU method, because the GPU does not provide the same accuracy as the CPU. However, we found that this problem is not critical in practical situations, because there are no visible differences in visualization results.
