This paper reports on a recent R&D trend in next-generation optical access systems for broadband access services. To smoothly introduce a next-generation optical access system, co-existence techniques with massively deployed GE-PON system is one of the most important point. Recently, the R&D of bandwidth upgrade has accelerated from GE-PON to 10G-EPON system. In future, WDM technology will be attractive technology for providing larger scale bandwidth and more flexible service operation. To widespread WDM technology into access systems, cost-effective optical component, simple wavelength monitor and control method, and improvement of wavelength spectral efficiency will be necessary. |
