(in English) NTT Network Service Systems Laboratories are conducting R&D on so-called "IP optical networking." (1) Multi-layer traffic engineering and multi-layer mutli-service networks are two major R&D areas. This paper presents overview of IP optical networking. Multi-layer traffic engineering improves network resource utilization and resiliency. Multi-layer multi-service network reduces the investment risk of network infrastructure. In order promulgate the network architecture we have been active in the IETF standardization. We developed a prototype systems for IP Optical TE server to show the proof-of-concept of our architecture using the testbed network constructed in our labs using commercial IP routers and optical transport node systems.
