Hitless Protection Switching Method for Passive Optical Network

(in English) Passive Optical Network (PON) can provide broadband services economically by sharing transmission facilities. To enhance network survivability, ITU-T Rec. G.983.5 defines some protection configurations and methods. The protection switching methods always bring about signal loss when the switching is performed. Network provider often has situations that one optical fiber cable needs to be replaced by another along a different route when the bridge with the cable is, for example, changed to anther place. If the switching is hitlessly done, he can carry out that anytime without bothering users. He can also offer higher grade broadband services, especially for leased line services. Thus the hitless protection technology for PON systems is very attractive and useful. This paper proposes hitless switching methods for PON systems based on PON’s peculiar features. We also present a specific hitless protection method for GE-PON as a design example.
