Measurement of acoustic property of liquid medium beyond a polymer plate

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Using focused ultrasound, the measurement for linear acoustic properties of a sample with volume as small as 0.1 ml, filling the space of about 1 mm thickness between a polystyrene plate and a tungsten reflector, is investigated. The experiment is conducted with 18.6 MHz burst waves radiated from the Gaussian source of 10.65 mm focal length. Because of small obliquely incident components of the present source with low focusing gain, the sound speed c in the sample is determined with the time difference between the waves reflected from the rear surface of polystyrene plate and the tungsten reflector, based on the theory for normal incident plane waves. The attenuation coefficient $\alpha$ is also measured from the reduced rate of the sound amplitude transmitted through the sample. On the other hand, in order to obtain the density $\rho$ related to the characteristic impedance $\rho$c, it is initially intended to measure the impedance mismatching utilizing the reflected wave from the rear surface of the plate. However, there exists an inconvenience that, depending on $\rho$ and c, the effective reflection coefficient at the rear surface of the plate becomes significantly smaller than that of normal incident plane waves, because the mode conversion to shear waves occurs more there due to increased oblique components with deflection at the front surface. By virtue of this, deriving the reduction rate of the reflection coefficient as a function of $\rho$ and c, $\rho$ is determined by searching the value to make the theoretical reflection coefficient coincide with the experimental reflection coefficient. The experimental result for liquid samples demonstrates the validity of the present measurement method.
