Efficient Classification for Gaussian Mixture Models with Interval Calculation

(in English) This work proposes an efficient Bayesian decision scheme for Gaussian mixture models (GMM). Statistical pattern classification problems with the Bayesian decision theorem often meet a situation that comparison between posterior probabilities of classes is obvious. In this work, the comparison for GMM is reduced to simple interval calculations. The exponential function is replaced by scaling and multiplication with powers of two, and the decision if the comparison is obvious and which class is most likely is efficiently calculated. For unclear cases, a refinement process is also proposed, where the computational accuracy is successively refined. In order to verify the significance, experimental results of the application to a skin color classifier are shown. It is shown that the classification for over 99.5% of all observed data was completed without any refinement process, and that the refinement process was able to complete all decision. The proposed method enables us to save redundant exponential operations and is expected for DSP or LSI implementation with low power consumption.
