Image Quality Improvement Based on Noise Reduction and Image Sharpening

(in English) Unsharp masking (UM) is used widely in order to sharpen the blurred image. However, in case where the image is corrupted by an additive noise, there is a drawback which is to enhance not only the original signal but also the noise. In this report, a new image sharpening method, which is robust for the additive noise, is proposed. The proposed method is realized by combining an edge preserving smoothing filter ($\varepsilon$-filter) and UM. Through the experiments employed noisy images, it is confirmed that the proposed method can produce the well sharpened and sufficiently noise suppressed image.
