Reduction of IDCT Mismatch Accumulation on MPEG Video Decoder

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This paper describes a noise reduction method for an MPEG video decoder in order to diminish a rapid accumulation of inverse-discrete-cosine-transform (IDCT) mismatch errors, which is typically produced on encoding motionless video sequences with a fixed pattern of the errors. Although MPEG standard defines an avoidance method for an encoder, called John Morris test, this test is described as a recommendation, an actually-ineffective rule. Then, we propose a decoding method to avoid this type of mismatch accumulation by substituting zeros for a weak block signal, which may offer a fixed pattern of mismatch errors. Evaluation results using an MPEG-4 video codec program show that the proposed method successfully reduces the rapid accumulation of IDCT mismatch errors in motionless video scenes
