A Phantom-coated Cavity-backed Bow-tie Antenna for Ground Penetrating Radar.

(in English) The frequency spectrum of a conventional ground penetrating radar is ranging from several MHz through
1GHz since the efficient penetration of the transmitted signal into the ground is necessary for the radar
system which is designed to be used on the soil having relatively high moisture content.
While the attenuation by the ground in higher frequency band becomes high as the amount of the soil increases,
it is important to increase the operating frequency of a radar system for higher resolution to detect smaller
embedded objects in the soil. In this paper, a new configuration for a ground penetrating radar antenna combined
with human equivalent phantom is proposed for the relatively low moisture content of the soil.
The FDTD simulations and actual field measurements were carried out with the proposed register
loaded cavity-backed bow-tie antenna including human equivalent phantom (thickness: 8 mm) placed
interior of the cavity to assess the performance of the proposed antenna.
