A single-carrier version of multi-user MIMO multiplexing has been attracting a lot of attention due to its low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). Recently, we have evaluated the uplink capacity of single-carrier (SC) multi-user MIMO multiplexing assuming frequency non-selective fading channel. As a result, it was shown that, although zero-forcing (ZF) detection and minimum mean square error (MMSE) detection provide approximately the same link capacity as MRC diversity, MLD can increase the link capacity of multi-user MIMO multiplexing over MRC diversity. In the case of broadband mobile communications, however, frequency selectivity of channel should be taken into account. Frequency domain equalization (FDE) for SC transmissions provides good bit error rate (BER) performance because of the frequency diversity effect. In this paper, we evaluate, by computer simulation, the uplink capacity of single-carrier multi-user MIMO multiplexing using FDE, in frequency-selective fading channel. The uplink capacity is obtained using the complimentary cumulative distribution function (CCDF) of the local average BER. Since the computational complexity of frequency-domain MLD is prohibitively large, ZF detection and MMSE detection are considered. It is shown that MIMO multiplexing in a frequency selective fading channel provides larger uplink capacity than that in a frequency-non-selective fading channel. Also in frequency-selective fading channel, ZF and MMSE detection provide approximately 1.3 times larger uplink capacity than MMSE-FDE receive antenna diversity in the case of 8 receive antennas. |
