Investigation of Reliability on ISP Backbone Networks
Noriaki Kamiyama (NTT), Hiroyoshi Miwa (Kwansei Gakuin Univ.) IN2007-191
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Through the migration of telephone services, the Internet becomes a social infrastructure for which high reliability is required. Especially, backbone networks carry a large part of the Internet traffic, so high reliability is indispensable. At the time of link or node failure, flows are detoured around the failed portion, so the hop count of flows and the link load possibly change widely as a result of failure. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the reliability of backbone networks from the viewpoint of stability in flow hop length and link load as well as connectivity. For ISPs, how to effectively improve reliability with minimum investment cost is an important issue, and they need to find the primary causes of reliability degradation and pinpoint desirable investment target to achieve this goal. In this paper, we analyze the possible primary causes of reliability degradation on backbone networks of 36 commercial ISPs and show a guide for effective investment of link capacities.
