Dynamic control of Extra Active Period for Power-saving LAN Switches

(in English) We have proposed ``Extra Active Period (EAP)'' model for mitigating the over-frequent mode switching, which gives rise to an in-rush current causing electrical damage to some devices on a energy-saving LAN switch, and we have analytically investigated the impact of EAP on power-saving effect and the frequency of mode changes by queueing theory. In this analysis, the value of EAP was set to be fixed and pre-determined, however, the dynamic control of EAP, which is determined according to the measurement value of packet inter-arrival time, is expected to be more effective for power-saving. Thus, this paper proposes the dynamic control scheme of EAP for power-saving LAN switches depending on the short-term fluctuation of packet inter-arrival time, and shows the power reduction ratio and the frequency of mode changes through computer simulation. Furthermore, we also show the impact of packet arrival model on the power-saving effect.
