Influence of Test Methods for Indirect Discharge of ESD Gun onto Horizontal Coupling Plane Norio Yamamoto (IRCS) EMCJ2007-123 |

The International Electro-technical Commission (IEC) prescribes the ESD immunity test (IEC610000-4-2) for electronic equipment, which specifies contact and air discharges of an ESD generator onto equipment under test (EUT). As regards the contact discharge testing, an indirect discharge to a horizontal coupling plane (HCP) in the vicinity of the EUT is also specified in order to simulate personnel discharges to objects adjacent to the EUT. The test method, however, was changed as follows. According to IEC 1000-4-2 1995-01(old standard), an ESD generator should be placed vertically at a distance of 0.1m from the EUT, while IEC 61000-4-2 2001-04 (new standard) prescribes that the discharge shall be made horizontally to the edge of the HCP without specifying any reference discharge points. In the enterprises that have done quality control based on the old standard for ESD immunity tests, therefore, it is empirically well known that there are not good correlations between the results by the new and old standard tests even for the same products. In this paper, using a simple printed circuit board (PCB) with a trace in lieu of EUT, we have measured the voltages induced on the trace, when making indirect discharges onto several points at a distance of 0.1m from different reference points on the HCP, and have examined how the difference of the above test methods affect the results. We have found that the new standard test provides greatly different waveforms of induced voltages with smaller peaks compared to those the old standard test does, while the reference discharge points specified in the new standard test less affects the induced voltage waveforms. |
