Evaluation of free-riding traffic problem in routing overlay networks and its mitigation method

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Recent researches on overlay networks have revealed that user-perceived network performance such as end-to-end delay could be improved by overlay routing mechanism, since the traditional IP routing is not generally
configured according to such metrics. However, ``free-riding'' traffic problem in routing overlay networks, which is mainly caused by policy mis-match between the overlay routing and the underlay IP routing, may become harmful for ISPs. In this report, we first define the free-riding problem in routing overlay network and evaluate the degree of free-riding traffic problem, using the measurement results of delay and available bandwidth of network paths between PlanetLab nodes. We also present the possible way to select overlay paths to mitigate the problem.
