Characteristic comparisons of L3/L4 protocols for Underwater Sensor Networks

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Recently, Underwater Sensor Network has attracted attention as a new network in the sea. However, the data transmission in this undersea environment suffers from various influences such as bandwidth usage limitation, surrounding noise, and huge acoustic transmission delays. Therefore, communication itself is a difficult problem compared with on-the-ground wireless environment. Moreover, an efficient communication cannot be done by the conventional protocols. The congestion window size doesn’t grow up sufficiently due to large transmission delays when conventional transport-layer protocols are applied in the underwater environment. Therefore, this paper investigates a usage of TCP Hybla suitable in the underwater environment, which was originally designed for satellite channels. We carry out performance comparisons with the conventional TCPs (for instance, Reno) and also evaluate the influence of ad-hoc routing protocols on the transport performance
