Development of Support System for Subject Choise using Semantic Web

(in English) We developed the subject’s selection system with using Semantic Web technology. We considered the usefulness of the system for supporting subjects selection in two departments in Tokyo Institute of Technology.
Semantic Web technology enables to develop a system which can be manage in easy way, in this case by students. The aim of the elaborated system is to help student to choose subjects and plan his/her semester schedule. The elaborated system was tested twice. The tests consist in selecting the subject by student. In the first test student used the official subject’s data like schedules and purposes. In the second test student used unofficial information about subjects from other students. We analyzed: changes in students characteristic between the first and second test results, number of the selected subjects, relationship between the number of selected subjects from another department and how good the system was understood by student. Analysis of the obtained results showed the increase of students’ interest for studying various fields. Moreover, the results indicate that subjects selection were maintained by voluntary effort. It is important to notice, that significant difference between number of the selected subjects number from another department was found. Furthermore the results showed that understanding of system and selected subjects from another department is correlated.
