Effect of spatial frequency variation on contour integration

(in English) A series of path-paradigm based experiments, which require subjects to detect a set of Gabor-patches placed along a smooth curve (path) embedded in randomly placed Gabor –patches, has been revealed various characteristics of the function of contour integration in early vision. This study used Gabor-patches with various spatial frequencies, instead of a single spatial frequency, and compared the difference of the path- detection rate between two conditions that the spatial frequency change smoothly along paths, and that spatial frequency changes randomly along paths. As a result the former case showed higher detection rate than the latter case. This result indicates that not only the smooth change of position, orientation, curvature, and depth, but also the smooth change of spatial frequency is necessary for the clear perception of paths.
