Neurophysiological correlate to the importance of tones comprising the musical scale -- an MEG study --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The recognition of a musical scale is an indispensable factor at least for a tune to be recognized as familiar. This study aimed to determine neurophysiological importance of tone in musical scale by using MEG. To this end, we prepared two experiments, and we call one the ‘Skip’ and another one the ‘Squeeze’. ‘Skip’ and ‘Squeeze’ are incomplete C major scales in which one tone is lacking. In ‘Skip’, the preceding tone is prolonged and in ‘Squeeze’, the subsequent tones are moved forward. In both the experiments, we observed MEG response in the time period when a tone is lacking. Large responses were observed when E or G was missing in the ‘Skip’ experiments, and in ‘Squeeze’, D, G or B caused large responses. The present study shows that these methods are quite effective in studying neurophysiological basis of the musical scale, one of the most important factors in music.
